Step 1: NOVA Labs Game
-
Pick a city and design a system
-
Record the types of energy you’re using in your handout
-
Test your system. (Feel free to redesign as you go, but note what you change!)
-
Click “Power Up” at the end of the test
-
Record the numbers under “CO2 Saved” and “Cost Per Ton” in your handout
-
One person from each team should add your data to the chart at the front of the room.
Step 2: Capture Notice & Wonders
What are you noticing about our systems? What are you wondering? Add these to your Notice & Wonder chart in your handout. Here are some examples:
-
"I'm noticing that each city has a different combination of types of renewable energy."
-
"I noticed that the time of year affected the energy."
-
"I wonder what geothermal energy is."
-
"I wonder why we had to record the CO2 saved."
Step 3: Review the Letter to the Public Utilities Commission
Review the letter from the County Commissioners to you, members of the Public Utilities Commission. As you read, make note of what you notice and wonder and add to your chart.
Step 4: Next Steps
Driving Question: How can we design sustainable energy systems for our community?
Turn and Talk: What are some next steps we can take to answer the questions we have?

Choose: 1 or 2 ideas to share.

Add: Put those ideas into your notes as directed by your facilitator.
